DreamWorks has announced the details of its ‘Fright Night’ panel in Hall H at the Comic-Con 2011, including plans to hold an advancing screening of the film.
Even though certain comic book superheroes are skipping out on a presentation at the 2011 Comic-Con Festival in San Diego next month, creatures of the night will be represented in full force – and not only by the glittering characters of Twilight infamy, but rather the more traditional vampire tale, Fright Night.
DreamWorks has announced the details of its Comic-Con presentation for the Fright Night remake, which will include the presence of cast members Colin Farrell, Anton Yelchin, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Imogen Poots – as well as screenwriter Marti Noxon and director Craig Gillespie.
The Fright Night panel will take place on Friday, July 22nd in Hall H of the San Diego Convention Center. In addition to a fan appreciation party following the event, DreamWorks has also scheduled an advanced screening of the 3D scarefest remake for select Con attendees.
For those not in the know, here’s the lowdown on Fright Night:
Senior Charley Brewster (Yelchin) finally has it all—he’s running with the popular crowd and dating the hottest girl (Poots) in high school. In fact, he’s so cool he’s even dissing his best friend Ed (Mintz-Plasse). But trouble arrives when an intriguing stranger Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right— yet no one, including Charley’s mom (Toni Collette), seems to notice! After witnessing some very unusual activity, Charley comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on his neighborhood.
Early word on the new Fright Night pic is that it definitely earns its R-Rating by featuring loads of gory vampire violence and naughty language – with Mintz-Plasse’s “Evil Ed” character being cut from the same block of wood as his Kick-Ass alter ego, Chris D’Amico/Red Mist, and David Tennant‘s vampire hunter Peter Vincent being a far cry from his friendlier Doctor Who persona. However, if the first Fright Night trailer is anything to go by, the visually dark horror-comedy looks to be hindered, rather than enhanced, by the 3D format.
While DreamWorks’ Cowboys & Aliens will also be screening at the Con in advance of its theatrical release, the Fright Night screening is a riskier proposition – since it will allow a month’s time to pass for either bad (or good) word of mouth to spread about the vampire flick (Jon Favreau’s genre mashup, by comparison, hits theaters just a week later). So that presumably means that DreamWorks is either fairly confident or deluded about the quality of its product.
The studio will also be holding a social media campaign titled “The Fright Night Feeding Frenzy” that offers participants the chance to win an all-accomadations-covered trip to the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con. Interested parties can check out the official Fright Night site for more information.
