Agents of SHIELD: The Force of Gravity

Original air date: May 11, 2018

Warning: Spoilers and Spoilers for Infinity War, which if you haven’t seen by now—stop what you are doing and go see it! I’ll wait…

MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – “The Force of Gravity” – Daisy’s future as the destroyer of worlds could take a critical change, on “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” FRIDAY, MAY 11 (9:01-10:01 p.m. EDT), on The ABC Television Network. (ABC/Mitch Haaseth)

If you think about it, Coulson’s death brought the Avengers together and they went on and saved the world. Is it right to ask him to die to save the world a second time? I know his answer would be yes, but to me, it seems a heavier cost than anyone else in the MCU has had to pay. Also, best case scenario he is only saving half the world. I’m glad I don’t have a heart condition or a normally super-stressful life, because watching these last few episodes have left me with heart palpitations. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop and something horrific to happen. I blame Infinity War for my lack of trust and underlying anxiety.

In the beginning of the season I was so curious to see how the show would tie-in to IW and now, the adage, “be careful what you wish for,” is burning a hole in my stomach—maybe it’s an ulcer. Before you worry too much about my sanity—I am fully aware that I take the lives of fictional characters way too seriously, I would like to think it is a charming quirk. But the tie-ins thus far to IW lead to fear that the final scene of the season is going to mirror the end of Infinity War and all this worrying about saving the world will be for naught. My greatest fear is that they choose to save Coulson, he is healed and then he becomes dust in the wind. I don’t know if I can handle it.

I hate this situation—save Coulson or save the world. There is only one Centipede serum left, and it can be used to stop Talbot or heal Coulson, and these are the only choices available? Fitz and Simmons can do all these amazing things, but they can’t recreate the serum or come up with a different option? Couldn’t the Particle Infusion Chamber that turned Talbot into Graviton (I mean that’s who he’s supposed to be, right?) be used to infuse the serum created from Jiaying into Coulson? Then they could use the Centipede serum on Talbot, save the world and Coulson and everyone can live happily ever after.

I don’t want this to seem like I don’t like the episode—this was an awesome episode! Daisy breaking the disc thingy keeping her unconscious was kick-ass. I am so glad that it only briefly detained her but makes me wonder if we will see Papa Kasius in the season finale. I would be completely happy if we didn’t see the Kasuis clan again, but I don’t think we will get that lucky. If nothing else, her brief time in the mind-meld with him gave us some insight about her feelings about the in-house fighting amongst the agents. She believes that their fighting is grounded in respect and I do believe that is true; like any family they aren’t always going to see eye-to-eye, but they will make up in the end. I do think that the making up should be led by Daisy apologizing to Yo-Yo, because she was rather rude to her (just saying).

Also, I think Mack is still being a hypocrite. If it comes to killing he will do it—not Yo-Yo. Why? Does he think she will become bloodthirsty? Because she is a woman? Because he thinks he’s better than everyone else? I don’t get it. Either you are willing to kill or not. There was too much debate about Ruby and what could have been, but when a friend is off his rocker, termination is thrown about rather quickly. Which is something they aren’t thinking through—I don’t know if the plan to infuse the Odium with the Centipede Serum is the best idea. Yeah it will most likely kill Talbot, but first it will give a giant burst of power—I’m pretty sure that is how you blow up a planet.

Finally, the moment we have all been waiting for—Coulson “hot lips” and May Kiss!!! (Insert my happy dance here.) I loved this moment. I loved Daisy and Deke’s faces even more. This was such a sweet and funny moment, and amidst a battle with aliens seemed like the perfect setting. It is for this reason (among others) that I want Coulson to live and for there to be another season. I would love to see the dynamics between the two evolve. I want them to be saving the world and figuring out how to have a work and personal relationship.
