Another guest piece, this time by Rudri Patel!

Headed to Comic-Con this year? Chances are you will want to take cool pictures of intricate costumes and your favorite cosplayers. But, there is an art to catching the best shot, so preparing yourself is necessary. With these tips, you will be sure to capture some fun memories to share with your friends and family.

Have the Right Gear

To take that memorable shot, you need to equip yourself with a camera that can take great pictures and is also practical for your visit. But, there is no need to spend money on a fancy camera with multiple lenses, when you can purchase a smartphone with a great camera instead. The Sony Xperia Z3 is a great option because it is compact and sleek, it has a long battery life and, most importantly, it comes with a 20.7 megapixel camera. And, with plenty of apps at your fingertips, you can filter and edit your photos all while having the freedom to pay attention, mingle and make memories.

Purchase Some Accessories

You can transform your phone into a more professional camera with just a few accessories. Consider the following:

Be Aware of Your Lighting

Lighting is an important component of any picture, so you need to know where to stand and what angle to be at to capture all of the unique features of a cosplayer. Before the convention begins, preview the lighting sources. Know where there is backlighting and potential for shadows and how the overhead lights change the color temperature of the room. Remember, too much or too little light will effect the quality of your picture.

Pay Attention to Composition

The intricate costumes and makeup of cosplayers are a quality you want to capture in your picture. Ideally, you want to choose a background and composition that accentuates their presentation. If you have the option, choose a neutral background with a single color, rather than a noisy, cluttered backdrop that will distract from the focus of your picture. If you can only get a picture in the crowd, though, blur the background by adjusting your aperture speed. You also need to set the white balance so a colored haze will not effect your picture.

Follow Etiquette Rules

Comic-Con is a unique opportunity for photographers to practice their skills and meet new people. Before taking any pictures, talk with the cosplayers and let them know how much your admire their costumes. Once you establish a rapport, you can ask to take a picture. Also, if you want to pose with the cosplayers, be careful of fragile details on their costumes. And, you may want to talk about your poses so you get the best pictures possible.

Have Fun

Comic-Con is an exciting and unique experience, so loosen up and have some fun with your photos. You may have to be patient to get the perfect shot, but don’t lose sight of the purpose of the event. So, try different techniques, meet new people and enjoy.

  • This is a brilliant topic for a how-to. Wish I’d known this going into my first cons. I love what you’re doing here on this site, I bet you’re helping a lot of first timers.

I’m working on a website specifically about fan conventions in Ohio (http://ohiofancons.com) and if you happen to know any expert con-goers in Ohio who’d like to help I’d love to hear from them.

But seriously, keep doing what you’re doing, you’ve got a great thing going on here.
