Yesterday New York’s world famous Times Square was visted by a guest from a Galaxy Far, Far Away! Celebrating the premiere of the three part animated LEGO Star Wars: The Yoda Chronicles, LEGO and Cartoon Network started things off by bringing to life a 1:1 scaled replica of an X-Wing fighter comprised entirely of LEGO pieces!
The fighter was took over a year to produce from concept to the final product. It is made out of just over 5.3 MILLION generic LEGO bricks and was assembled by a team of 32 builders in only 17,336 man hours. The X-Wing is 42 times the size of the LEGO X-Wing Starfighter (set 9493) and measures in at 11 feet tall and 43 feet long with a wingspan of 44 feet.
The display will spend the holiday weekend in Manhattan before it is transported to the LEGOLAND California Resort where it will be on display for the remainder of the year.
The display area also featured a number of life-sized characters from Star Wars constructed by LEGO bricks, such as C-3PO, R2-D2, and Darth Vader. Also on site were a few elite members of the Imperial Troopers who patrolled the X-Wing in hopes of capturing the rebel who owned it. There was also a special photo area set up where fans could get a printed photograph of them and a life-sized LEGO brick Yoda wearing a special “NY I <3” tee shirt!
LEGO also gave fans the opportunity of purchasing the super cool and very in detail X-Wing Red Five model kit, and as a bonus fans also received a very limited edition Yoda minifig featuring the very same New York themed shirt he was wearing in the life-sized model.
