Vegan Friendly Restaurants in San Diego

As a frequent traveler of the American comics convention circuit one of my favorite perks when I visit all of the cities is the opportunity to try out new restaurants. Although I am easily satisfied by stopping at a simple burger joint I have to be considerate of the options made available to my girlfriend, who is vegan.

While basically everywhere sells plain salad and water I know from experience how frustratingly boring that can be meal after meal while she watches me enjoy the full spectrum of foods that an uninhibited diet yields. So we do our research ahead of time, check out menus and reviews online and make lists of possible food eateries that have both a pleasing menu and an appropriate atmosphere for a couple in their mid-twenties.

To get this started, here is a VERY small list of places we have found that may suit the needs of all in your party and happen to serve more than basic salad. If you know of any places that offer great vegan options please contact us and we will add it to the list.

TIP: If you want a drink with ice avoid the fast food joints near the convention center. Travel a bit north and you might luck out.

  1. Pokez is a definite must while in SD. Little bit of a wait, it’s a small place. But, worth it. And great for the Vegans with meat eating friends. They have a fantastic Vegan Chimichanga…yet their Carne Asada Tacos and Burritos are a hit. Service is casual, and a couple of the servers can be a little terse. Still a great atmosphere. Highly recommed it.

  2. Awesome article! Thanks for the info. I’ll be travelling to CC for the first time this year as Press and was hoping I wouldn’t have to pack my own snacks and meals!

  3. Mario — Don’t forget about Ralph’s Grocery Store! If you want to save money and want some fresh foods, make lunch/dinner at the salad bar, pick up a box cereal and soy milk. or some snacks.. it will be cheapest here!

  4. Before you head out next time, you may want to check out this link: http://vegsandiego.com/veg/38/Restaurants.htm which covers vegetarian and vegan choices in San Diego. Some are full restaurants with vegetarian or vegan options.

There is a fast food vegan drive thru on 5th near Hillcrest. If you can drive a little ways to the community of Clairemont in the northern part of the city there is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant call Sipz (www.sipz.com). It is Asian fusion and is mostly vegan.

Anyway, good luck, I’m newly a vegan and thought it would be hard to find places to eat but many places in San Diego have vegan selections or are willing to slightly modify to make it vegan. PF Chang’s is popular and I found out that their vegetarian selections are actually vegan.

  5. Thank you for this article! It’s going to be my first Comic Con and my boyfriend (long-time goer) was afraid I wouldn’t find anything to eat down there. But my sister used to live in San Diego as a vegan so I don’t think it will be a problem for me. 🙂
